Osprey Approach has launched the latest episode of its Empowering Law Firm Leaders podcast with one of the UK’s top Legal Linkedin influencers to explore how law firms can embed compliance into their culture, build trust across their teams and prepare for the future.
In episode 25 of the Empowering Law Firm Leaders podcast, Eloise Butterworth, head of risk and compliance at Hive Risk joins Amy Bruce, Osprey’s marketing director to explore the essential traits of successful compliance officers, common blind spots that increase risk, and how firms can turn compliance to their strategic advantage.
This latest podcast includes:
- Key principles of effective compliance
- Traits of successful compliance officers
- Building influence through authenticity
- Common risk blind spots in legal teams
Far from being limited to AML and ID checks, Eloise said that compliance encompasses “everything that no one wants to touch,” from regulatory issues to insurance and ethics. She welcomed the growing strategic involvement of compliance leaders, and added:
“We’re seeing more and more [strategic involvement] now… compliance managers getting that seat at the big table.”
Eloise believes that technical knowledge is only half the job, and successful compliance managers have essential traits including “attention to detail, being inquisitive, curious… a desire to constantly adapt and improve”. But what sets the best apart, she says, is understanding people and context:
“This job is not about carrot and stick; it’s way more nuanced than that.” Self-awareness and humility are equally vital she added: “We’re not infallible. We’re not robots.” Building psychological safety through openness and empathy strengthens trust across the firm.
Eloise believes there are three key areas where legal teams are most exposed: ethics, AML risk assessment, and technology: “If you aren’t utilising tech, you’re going to fall behind… but without the right knowledge and risk frameworks in place, you’re going to be exposed.”
Watch the full interview with Eloise Butterworth now to discover more guidance on building a successful compliance function and preparing your firm for the future. You’ll also hear Eloise’s exclusive advice on what the future looks like for compliance, and top tips for managing AML risk.
