The Equalities and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and Secretary of State and Minister for Women and Equalities have announced a new Commissioner for Wales, Eryl Besse.  

Marcial Boo, Chief Executive of the EHRC, said: 

“We are very pleased to welcome Eryl as the Commission’s Wales Commissioner Eryl’s experience as a lawyer, board member and advisor on issues ranging from education to counter-terrorism will enable her to support our work as an independent, authoritative regulator of equality and human rights laws and standards in Britain.” 

Eryl Besse, the new EHRC Wales Commissioner, said:

 “It is an important time to become part of the EHRC as it launches its new three-year strategy to promote and uphold equality and human rights laws and standards across Wales and the rest of Britain.

“I look forward to working closely with the Commission’s team in Wales, the people and organisations of Wales, and to representing Wales on the EHRC Board.” 

Rev Ruth Coombs, Head of Wales, Equality and Human Rights Commission, added:  

“Eryl Besse is a legal professional with both domestic and international experience, a fearless advocate for education in Wales and a Welsh first language speaker. We are delighted she will be championing the work of the Equality and Human Rights Commission both in Wales and across Britain.”
