North Wales Community Law, an independent legal charity which opened its doors in 2023, is recruiting a ‘talented, strategic’ legal services director, alongside other roles, to help end the previous legal advice desert in the area.

NWCL provides free, independent legal advice on issues affecting the lives of local people, including problems with housing, family breakdown and welfare benefits. As well as its child-friendly offices at Llandudno Junction, its advisers also meet clients are food banks, libraries and community centres.

The post will be key to making the advice desert a little greener, explains Katherine Adams, operations director and one of the driving forces behind NWCL, who said:

“The North Wales landscape is lush and green, but it’s an advice desert. We’re looking for a talented, strategic and ambitious lawyer who is committed to social justice to lead our legal team and fight for change. Join us to work in innovative ways with our diverse and welcoming communities and help the poorest people in our region uphold their rights.”

Recruitment of an experienced solicitor to the key post of legal services director will give another significant boost to NWCL’s services, allowing it to also focus on bringing strategic legal challenges to tackle systemic injustices, research and policy development.

The new director will be supported as they help to ‘transform many lives’ in North Wales, as Katherine explained:

‘We aim to practise what we preach. We know this work is demanding intellectually and emotionally, and the risk of burnout is real. That is why we take staff wellbeing and work life balance seriously. We work flexibly and as a collaborative, supportive team.

“Our grant funding means advisers are not forced to work with one eye on their billing targets, but can respond to what the client in front of them needs, taking the time and care that each individual’s situation warrants.”

North Wales Community Law is also recruiting a Solicitor and a Caseworker to join its team.
